Search continues for man who fell in
canal
Sunday, June 25, 2006
(Passaic-WABC, June 25, 2006) (WABC) -- The search
for a New Jersey man who
fell into the Passaic River continued Sunday morning.
The man has been
missing since Saturday night and is presumed dead.
Witnesses say he was playing
soccer with friends when the ball got away. The
man went to chase it, and fell
into a canal. No one has seen him since. Eyewitness
News reporter Jeff Pegues
is in Passaic with more. Fire officials were searching
the Dundee Canal on
Saturday night. A lot of time has passed and so
far they have not spotted the
victim. They say that with each passing minute,
his chances of survival are
dwindling. The victim is identified by family
members as Mauricio Peres,
35-years-old. The family is waiting for word and
hoping for the best. Authorities
say they had four boats in the Passaic River searching
for the victim Saturday
night. They think Peres may have flowed down river
from the Dundee Canal and
into the Passaic River. Passaic fire officials
spotted what the man was
after when he fell in. "We have seen a little
soccer ball going down the river,"
said Deputy Chief Mike Martocci of the Passaic
Fire Department on Saturday
night. So far, there have been no signs of the
35-year-old. "The river took
him," said Arturo Sanchez, the missing man's
friend. The search teams were
spread out along the Dundee Canal in Clifton and
into the Passaic River as
residents looked on. There were several staging
areas set up Saturday night.
Passaic's Deputy Fire Chief seems to have lost
hope the man will be found alive.
"We're right now in the Passaic River on
possible body recovery," he said.
FIRE 189 HOWE AVENUE - TOUR # 2
On April, 5th 2008, at 2:07 AM, The Passaic Fire
Department was
dispatched to 289 Howe Ave, located about 5 building
away from the Westside
Firehouse, for a reported fire. The deputy chief
on duty pulled out of the
firehouse and was confronted by a heavy smoke
condition in the area and transmitted
the working fire. As he made his way through the
smoke he reported he had a
2 sty brick row house with heavy fire showing
side a 1st & 2nd floor with
reported occupants trapped. As companies arrived
a aggressive interior attack
and rescue efforts where put into action but the
heavy fire condition made it
nearly impossible to enter the structure and companies
where pulled from the
building. At this time efforts where being made
to stop fire spread to the
other apartments. The fire was running the common
cockloft and companies
attempted to pull ceilings in other apartments
to knock town the extension. As
companies where in the process of stopping extension,
the 2nd floor in exposure b1
flashed causing companies to bail. At this time
it was believed the building
was a loss and an exterior attack was put into
effect. Companies reentered a
short time later to mop up and do a search for
the missing occupants. Two
teenagers where discovered to have succumbed in
the fire. Six firefighters
received minor injuries. The fire was brought
under control around 6:11AM.
FIRE - VACANT STRUCTURE - 40 HOWE AVENUE
- TOUR # 4
It was a little after 3:30am on Saturday when Passaic EMS noticed smoke
coming from the rear of a boarded up house at 40 Howe Ave. They immediately
notified police headquarters and then responded to the scene. The fire department
was dispatched and Deputy Chief Martocci arrived on the scene to find heavy
smoke coming from a 2.5 story frame on the C side of the structure. Chief
Martocci notified the arriving companies that the structure was boarded up and
they would have to use forcible entry, he asked for truck 2 to take the front
of
the building to vent the second floor windows and protect exposure???s. He
then directed engine 1 to take a hydrant and to feed truck 2 and also asked
for them to stretch a line to the B side and to the C side. Engine 3 was asked
to bring man power to the front of the building. Chief Martocci then asked
dispatch to send additional companies to the scene as they had a working fire
and notified Carlstadt for a fast assignment and to strike a second alarm as
the fire was beginning to progress. On the second alarm an engine from
Clifton, that was redirected to the scene for more man power an engine from
Wallington, Little Falls, Truck from Garfield, and Paterson that stood by in the
firehouses as the fire began to progress. Shortly after the second alarm was
struck, Chief Martocci requested exterior operations and asked for units to
set-up for heavy duty operations. A third alarm was struck which brought a truck
from Wallington and engine from Rutherford went to the scene. The fire took
more then 3 hours to bring under control and is being investigated. Chief
Martocci and his department and out of town companies did a great job controlling
the fire and protecting the other structure as the weather played a factor
with the wind blowing and light rain fall.
